Summary

In collaboration with the YRA, PDC, and PRSD networks, Intercultural Competencies for Social and Economical Inclusion (ICOSEI) invites twenty immigrant youth workers who are interested in or currently facing intercultural and social problems to travel to Bonn and Seixal for participation in an intensive training course designed to enhance their lives and the lives of others in their communities by teaching improved skills, knowledge, attitudes related to organizing and working with multicultural and intercultural groups; thereby increasing the overall competency of participants and widening their horizons for the future. This training course specifically focuses on developing competencies and skills that complement vocational training, increase notions of socioeconomic responsibility, and teach improved responses for arising situations in disadvantaged immigrant communities. The program aims to mobilize youth workers in the labor force by making participants more attractive to their larger communities. Topics covered in this training are designed to stimulate reflection on the essential characteristics of European society and, above all, to encourage youth immigrant workers to play active roles in their communities.
This project will be divided into 3 fundamental axes, such as the importance of intercultural competencies of immigrant youth workers to increase the social-economical responses in their residence countries, competencies of immigrant youth workers on multicultural, intercultural learning in the immigrant communities and social neighborhoods and participation and knowledge on social-economic development of immigrants’ community based in both Germany and Portugal by providing social assistance. The program will be held in two training stages: the first stage will take place in Bonn, Germany during the 25th and the 30th of November 2018 and the second stage will take place in Seixal, Portugal between the 5th and the 10th of March 2019. Topics covered in the course will be arranged around three core components:

1. The importance of “intercultural competency” for immigrant youth workers in generating better socioeconomic responses in their countries of residence.
2. Increasing competency levels connected to multicultural and intercultural issues among youth workers in immigrant communities. Knowledge for active participation in social groups and neighborhoods, specifically in assisting socioeconomic development in immigrant communities based in both countries. The overall goal of this project is to enhance mobility for young immigrant workers by engaging in synergistic dialogues on the best ideas, practices, and partnerships for integrating immigrants individually and in communities. We believe that being educated about intercultural development empowers youth (specifically workers) and that learning non-formal educational tools strengthens an individual towards becoming a more effective agent in their socioeconomic circumstances.

Our specific objectives are as defined:

 Work with immigrant groups to develop essential intercultural and social competency skills

 Provide better answers and ideas about socioeconomic conditions
 Support communities in disadvantaged situations
 Reduce the negative stigma associated with context of socioeconomic responsibility and immigrant integration in the context of European Youth Cooperation
 Add available youth workers to local communities
 Make twenty youth workers well-prepared by building their confidence about integration
 Provide a basis for approaching and initiating dialogues about poverty and problems of socioeconomic exclusion amongst immigrants and refugees by raising awareness of the values underpinning non-formal education and socioeconomic responsibility (and creating motivation to spread these values by teaching their benefits)
 Increase motivation for immigrant youth worker participants to introduce intercultural learning and social responsibility by creating supportive conditions to teach them how to engage others
 Serve as ambassadors for understanding social, cultural and economic differences between the partner countries We expect to have an impact on participants and their organizations regarding human values and socioeconomic responsibilities as well as intercultural learning. By bringing immigrant youth workers together to live in dignity while engaging them in constructive dialogues and capacity-building activities, this training course strengthens the presence of youth workers in their communities and teaches them to promotes values of diversity. In the long term, the training provided by this project will potentially benefit immigrant communities by creating an increased value in socioeconomic responsibility and intercultural skills. It is our hope that immigrant youth workers trained in this program will go on to achieve reasonable living conditions, function well in practical life applications. Most importantly the participants of this program become a part of a larger support network for immigrant youth workers and continue to provide skills that help build projects that benefit immigrants in the future.
